Lithium Manganese Dioxide (Li-MnO₂)

The lithium manganese dioxide battery (Li-MnO₂, also written Li/MnO₂ or abbreviated CR in IEC nomenclature) is a primary (non-rechargeable) lithium electrochemical cell. It is one of the most widely produced battery types in the world, primarily in the coin cell format (e.g., CR2032), and is the standard power source for low-drain applications including watches, calculators, key fobs, medical devices, and memory backup circuits.

Overview

Li-MnO₂ cells use a lithium metal anode, a heat-treated electrolytic manganese dioxide (EMD or CMD) cathode, and a non-aqueous electrolyte of lithium perchlorate or lithium trifluoromethanesulfonate dissolved in a mixed organic solvent (typically propylene carbonate and 1,2-dimethoxyethane). The combination delivers a nominal cell voltage of 3.0 V — approximately twice that of alkaline primary cells — with high energy density, flat discharge profile, and excellent shelf life.

Electrochemistry

During discharge, lithium at the anode is oxidised:

Anode: Li → Li⁺ + e⁻

At the cathode, Li⁺ ions are intercalated into the MnO₂ lattice, reducing Mn⁴⁺ to Mn³⁺ in a solid-solution mechanism:

Cathode: MnO₂ + Li⁺ + e⁻ → LiMnO₂

The reaction proceeds by a two-stage mechanism: an initial two-phase region followed by a solid-solution region as lithium occupancy in the MnO₂ lattice increases. The practical Li/Mn ratio at full discharge (to ~2 V) is approximately 0.8–1.0. The overall discharge curve is comparatively flat at ~2.8–3.0 V, making the chemistry well suited to low-drain devices that require stable voltage over long periods.

Key Performance Characteristics

  • Nominal voltage: 3.0 V
  • Energy density (gravimetric): 200–280 Wh kg⁻¹
  • Energy density (volumetric): 400–600 Wh L⁻¹
  • Shelf life: 10 years (90% capacity retained at 20°C)
  • Self-discharge: <1% per year at room temperature
  • Operating temperature: -20°C to +70°C (standard); specialised grades to -40°C
  • Typical capacity (CR2032): 220–255 mAh

Advantages

  • High nominal voltage (3 V): doubles the voltage of alkaline cells, enabling simpler circuitry
  • Flat discharge curve: stable voltage maintained across >90% of capacity for most low-drain applications
  • Excellent shelf life: passive lithium chloride film on the anode suppresses self-discharge
  • Wide operating temperature range: maintains performance at temperatures where alkaline cells fail
  • High volumetric energy density: enables very compact cell formats (coin, cylindrical, pin)
  • Established global supply chain and standardised cell sizes (CR2032, CR2025, CR2016, etc.)

Limitations

  • Primary only: not rechargeable; attempting to recharge causes gas evolution, leakage, and thermal hazard
  • High internal resistance at high discharge rates: unsuitable for high-drain applications (>10 mA continuous)
  • Organic electrolyte: flammable; requires safe handling and disposal
  • Lithium metal anode: regulated for transport (IATA/IMDG quantity limits)
  • Manganese dissolution at elevated temperatures or deep discharge can degrade cell performance

Applications

Consumer electronics (watches, calculators, key fobs, remote controls, hearing aids), medical devices (glucose monitors, cardiac monitors, implantable devices), automotive (TPMS, immobilisers, remote keyless entry), industrial electronics (PLCs, CMOS memory backup, real-time clocks), and IoT sensors requiring moderate drain over multi-year service intervals.
