Paralleling of Battery packs

    Hello Battery Designers,

    I am Sufi, a Battery Engineer with 3 years of industry experience in the battery space. I have developed batteries from scratch. I have also developed multiple BMS for 48 V system.

    I am trying to solve one interesting problem, I am sharing the problem statement and let’s share our thoughts in the thread.

    When multiple packs are connected in parallel, HV packs will start charging the LV packs. This is clearly undesirable.

    I am trying to tackle this issue with my BMS design. This basically boils down to reverse current protection to the battery pack.

    The simplest solution is using a Schottky diode, but that’s a bad solution, since there will be a power loss across it and the loss will be significant at higher discharge currents.

    Have you guys faced this scenario before, if yes, how did you tackle it.

    One option is to use a DC-DC from each pack to the HV bus and then you can have control over each battery pack and how much it charges/discharges.
