EV Connectors — DC Fast Charging Interfaces (CCS and CHAdeMO)
IEC 62196-3:2022 defines the DC connector configurations used in high-power direct-current fast charging of electric vehicles, including the Combined Charging System (CCS) Combo 2 (European) and Combo 1 (North American) interfaces, and the AA (CHAdeMO-compatible) and BB configurations. The standard supports systems up to 1,500 V DC at 800 A — sufficient for emerging megawatt charging applications for commercial vehicles. The 2022 second edition aligned with the updated IEC 62196-1 and added guidance for higher-power DC applications.

Current edition: IEC 62196-3:2022 (2nd edition)
Scope
- DC connector configurations: Configuration EE (CCS Combo 2 — Europe), Configuration FF (CCS Combo 1 — North America), Configuration AA (CHAdeMO-compatible)
- Supports high-voltage DC fast charging up to 1,500 V DC / 800 A
- Used with Mode 4 DC charging as defined in IEC 61851-23
- Physical, electrical, and safety requirements for DC vehicle couplers
- Basis for CCS certification in EU and North American markets
Relationship to other standards
IEC 62196-3 builds on IEC 62196-1 general connector requirements. Mode 4 DC fast charging using these connectors is defined in IEC 61851-23. ISO 15118 provides the digital communication protocol overlaid on CCS Combo connections for Plug and Charge operation. SAE J3400 (NACS) is an alternative DC fast charge connector gaining adoption in North America. The CHAdeMO association is the Japanese body behind the AA-configuration DC connector, which is being phased out in favour of CCS in most markets.
