Renault 5 E-Tech

The Renault 5 E-Tech has two battery packs defined by usable energy of 40kWh and 52kWh. Initially the vehicle is launched with the 52kWh usable pack. This pack is assembled by Ampere, a subsidiary of Renault and using AESC pouch cells.

  • Energy Density
    • Gravimetric ~ 185 Wh/kg
  • Power Density
    • Gravimetric ~ 414 W10s/kg

  • Usable Energy = 52 kWh
    • Total ~ 55 kWh
    • SoC usable window ~ 95%
  • Configuration
    • 92 s
    • 2 p
    • Total #cells = 184

Charging

  • Fast Charging = 100 kW
    • 15-80% = 30 minutes
    • 10-80% = 33 minutes
  • V2G
    • 11 kW AC bidirectional charger
  • V2L
    • 3.7kW

Thermal

  • Liquid Cooling
  • Pre-conditioning for DC charging

The liquid cooling circulates through the “extruded floor” of the battery enclosure.

Structural

It appears that Renault Ampere have made the decision to include the side crash structure in the seat rails and not add crossbeams inside the battery enclosure.

advantage of the all-electric design of the AmpR Small platform is that the seat crossmembers have been specially designed to protect the battery without the need for reinforcements inside the body, freeing up maximum space for the cells

BMS

  • BMS hardware and software is designed and engineered by Ampere

Modules

  • Number of modules = 4
  • Number of cells/module = 46
  • Mass = 55 kg

Cells

  • Manufacture = Envision AESC
  • Chemistry = NMC
  • Nominal ~ 299 Wh

The Renault 5 E-Tech battery pack compares very well with other battery packs in the database.

Safety

The safety features quoted by Renault are the Fireman Access and Pyroswitch:

  • SD pyro switch; disconnect the battery from high-voltage network to ensure safety as needed
  • fireman access; hatch designed to flood the battery quickly if needed to contain and control battery fire
