In the previous article, I wrote a detailed analysis of VW MEB Platform and Battery pack for ID4 and ID3. You can read the article here. VW ID 3,4,5 and Buzz comes in various models Pure, Pro, Pro.S, Pro Performance, GTX. We will see the benchmarking based on the battery pack module configuration. In this article, we will thus consider the 3 Types of battery pack Configuration: 8 Modules, 9 Modules and 12 Modules. This is live article as we get more information we will fill this in the Table.

Key Pack Metrics
When designing a battery pack you will always be asked to benchmark it. For this there are a number of key metrics:
Key Pack Metrics | 8 Modules Battery Pack | 9 Modules Battery Pack | 12 Modules Battery Pack | Comment |
---|---|---|---|---|
Safety | ||||
Wh/kg – Pack Gravimetric Energy Density | ~158.5 | ~161.5 | ~157.5 | 8,9 Module pack is based on estimated weight |
Wh/Litre | ~180 | ~201 | ~208 | |
W/kg | ||||
W/litre | ||||
$/kWh | ||||
Cell to Pack mass ratio | ~62.8% | ~64.5% | ~52.6% | 8 and 9 Module packs have empty spaces whereas 12 module pack is efficiently packed. Again pack weight is assumed |
cell to Pack Volume ratio | ||||
Module to Pack mass Ratio | ~75.6% | ~77.7% | 76% | 8,9 Module pack is based on estimated weight. Module weight assumed 31kg |
Durability – % of pack capacity available after 10 years |

A first look at pack metrics versus application and what is important and what is not.
5 = important
1 = not important
