Needs review: this page is very short and has no references. It needs nominal cell voltage, electrode reactions, self-discharge figures and citations for the energy density and applications claims, which require sourcing before they can be added.
The Nickel Iron battery or NiFe battery, nickel(III) oxide-hydroxide positive plates and iron negative plates, with an electrolyte of potassium hydroxide. A very low gravimetric energy density of 19 to 25Wh/kg.
Also known as the Edison Battery as it was invented by Thomas Edison in 1901.
Advantages:
- Long life
- Able to withstand vibration
- Withstand high temperatures
Disadvantages:
- High cost and high self-discharge rate
Have long been used in mining operations because of their ability to withstand vibrations, high temperatures and other physical stress.
