IEC 60730 is a series of standards published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) covering automatic electrical controls used in household and similar applications, with particular relevance to battery management systems (BMS) and the protective functions embedded within them. The standard establishes safety and functional requirements for automatic controls that switch, protect, or regulate electrical circuits — including the sensing, decision-making, and switching elements found in BMS firmware and hardware.

Current edition: IEC 60730-1:2022 (general requirements), with numerous Part 2 standards for specific control types
Related standards: IEC 61508 (functional safety), IEC 62133-2 (portable Li battery safety)
Scope
IEC 60730-1 establishes general requirements for automatic electrical controls used in, on, or in association with household and similar appliances. In the context of batteries and energy systems, it is relevant to the control circuits, protection relays, and firmware-driven protective functions within battery management systems — particularly in residential battery storage systems, home UPS units, and domestic appliance battery packs. The standard addresses both the hardware aspects of controls (insulation, contact ratings, mechanical durability) and the software/firmware aspects (software classes A, B, and C with increasing rigour requirements).
Key Requirements
IEC 60730-1 defines three software classes for automatic controls based on the consequences of control failure. Class A applies where a software failure does not lead to unsafe conditions. Class B applies where software failure could lead to unsafe operation but the risk is considered acceptable due to other protective measures. Class C applies where software failure could directly cause a hazardous condition — this class requires the most rigorous software development and verification practices and is most relevant to BMS protective functions such as overvoltage and overtemperature cut-off.
Relevance to Battery Engineering
For battery system engineers designing residential BESS, home energy storage, or domestic battery-powered appliances, IEC 60730 is relevant to the certification of BMS protective functions. Product safety standards such as IEC 62368-1 and UL 9540 reference IEC 60730-class software requirements when assessing the reliability of automatic protective controls. Understanding the software class framework helps engineers set appropriate verification and testing requirements for BMS firmware, particularly for the critical protection functions that prevent thermal runaway under overvoltage or overtemperature conditions.
