IEC 61000-6-2 is the generic electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) immunity standard for equipment used in industrial environments, published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). It defines the minimum electromagnetic immunity requirements that electrical and electronic equipment must meet when deployed in industrial locations — including battery energy storage systems, battery management systems, grid-connected inverters, and associated monitoring and control equipment.

Scope
IEC 61000-6-2 applies to electrical and electronic equipment intended for use in industrial environments — locations characterised by the presence of industrial, scientific, and medical (ISM) equipment, high-power switching devices, large inductive loads, and power conversion equipment. This covers factory floors, industrial plants, substations, and commercial BESS installations. Equipment covered includes BESS inverters, BMS controllers, industrial chargers, and associated communication and monitoring hardware.
Key Requirements
IEC 61000-6-2 specifies immunity test requirements across a range of electromagnetic phenomena typical of industrial environments. These include electrostatic discharge (ESD), radiated electromagnetic field immunity, electrical fast transient/burst immunity (EFT/B) on power and signal lines, surge immunity on power and signal lines, conducted disturbances from radio-frequency fields, power frequency magnetic field immunity, and voltage dips and short interruptions on the power supply. Each phenomenon has defined test levels and performance criteria (A, B, C, or D) that equipment must meet.
Relevance to Battery Engineering
For engineers designing BESS systems, industrial battery chargers, or BMS hardware for industrial deployment, IEC 61000-6-2 compliance is a mandatory element of CE marking in Europe and is referenced in most industrial product safety frameworks. EMC immunity testing to this standard verifies that BMS electronics and control systems will not malfunction due to electromagnetic interference in the industrial environments where they operate. Poor EMC immunity in a BMS can cause spurious protective shutdowns, measurement errors, or — in the worst case — failure of protective functions during an electromagnetic disturbance, making compliance directly relevant to both product reliability and safety.
