In-Cable Control and Protection Device (IC-CPD) for Mode 2 Charging of Electric Road Vehicles
IEC 62752:2024 specifies requirements for in-cable control and protection devices (IC-CPDs) — the portable safety units built into Mode 2 EV charging cables that allow charging from a standard domestic socket. The IC-CPD provides residual current detection, overcurrent protection, temperature monitoring of the household plug, and generation of the control pilot (CP) signal that communicates available current to the vehicle’s on-board charger. The 2024 second edition added mandatory temperature sensing of the household plug current-carrying parts — a critical addition prompted by fires caused by overheating at under-rated domestic outlets. IC-CPDs covered by this standard are commonly described as “granny cables” or “portable EVSEs”.

Current edition: IEC 62752:2024 (2nd edition, March 2024)
Replaces: IEC 62752:2016 + Amendment 1:2018
Scope
- IC-CPDs for Mode 2 EV charging — vehicles connected to a standard domestic or industrial socket via a portable cable
- Residual current detection (RCD), overcurrent protection, and CP signal generation
- Single-phase circuits up to 250 V and multiphase circuits up to 480 V, maximum rated current 32 A
- New in 2024: mandatory temperature control device detecting temperature of household plug contacts to prevent thermal damage
- EMC requirements harmonised with IEC 61543 and IEC 61851-21-2
Relationship to other standards
IEC 62752 covers the protective device within a Mode 2 charging cable. Mode 2 charging itself is defined in IEC 61851-1. The physical connector at the vehicle end of a Mode 2 cable is typically a Type 2 connector governed by IEC 62196-2, or a Type 1 connector in North American markets. For dedicated EVSE (Mode 3 charging), see IEC 61851-1. IEC 62955 covers the separate residual DC detecting device used in dedicated AC charging stations.
