Standard for Interconnection and Interoperability of Distributed Energy Resources with Associated Electric Power Systems Interfaces
IEEE 1547-2018 is the US foundational standard for interconnecting distributed energy resources (DER) — including battery energy storage systems (BESS), photovoltaic inverters, and fuel cells — to the electric power system (EPS). It establishes technical requirements for the performance, operation, testing, safety, and maintenance of the interconnection, and is adopted by reference in federal FERC interconnection rules and in state utility tariffs across the US. The 2018 revision was a major update from the 2003 edition, adding dynamic reactive power support, voltage and frequency ride-through requirements, and advanced grid-support functions that are mandatory for utility-scale BESS. For battery storage interconnection in North America, IEEE 1547-2018 is the primary governing technical document.

Scope
IEEE 1547-2018 covers DER interconnection to the EPS at voltages up to 100 kV with aggregate capacity up to 10 MVA (expandable by agreement). Key technical requirements include:
- Voltage and frequency ride-through: Mandatory trip settings and ride-through performance requirements for abnormal voltage and frequency events, with three categories (I, II, III) based on sensitivity needs
- Reactive power capability: DER must be capable of dynamic reactive power support (volt-VAR); categories define the required range
- Active power control: Frequency-watt response, ramp rate control, and active power curtailment requirements
- Interoperability: Communication interface requirements referencing IEEE 2030.5, IEEE 1815 (DNP3), and SunSpec Modbus
- Islanding detection: Mandatory unintentional islanding prevention with defined detection times
- Testing and certification: Conformance test procedures referenced in IEEE 1547.1-2020
Relationship to other standards
IEEE 1547 defines the grid interconnection interface; NEC Article 706 defines the on-site electrical installation. NFPA 855 governs siting and fire safety of the BESS installation. UL 9540 and UL 9540A address product listing and fire propagation. For utility-scale projects, NERC standards (PRC, FAC, VAR series) layer on top of IEEE 1547 once the system is above the NERC threshold. In Europe, the equivalent grid connection requirements are in EN 50549-1/2 and the network codes under EU Regulation 2016/631 (RfG). IEEE 1547.1-2020 provides the conformance test procedures for IEEE 1547-2018.
