Electrically Propelled Road Vehicles — Connection to an External Electric Power Supply — Safety Requirements for Off-Board Chargers
ISO 17409 specifies safety requirements for off-board (external) conductive charging systems for electrically propelled road vehicles. It covers AC and DC charging infrastructure and addresses the safety of the charger-to-vehicle connection, the charging process, and the interface between the electric vehicle supply equipment (EVSE) and the on-board battery system.

Current edition: ISO 17409:2020
Related standards: ISO 15118 (V2G communication), IEC 61851 (EV conductive charging systems)
Scope
ISO 17409 applies to off-board conductive chargers for road vehicles with on-board rechargeable energy storage systems up to 1000 V DC and 1000 V AC. It covers safety requirements for the charger hardware, the coupling system, and the communication between charger and vehicle. Inductive (wireless) charging is outside scope (see ISO 19363).
Key Safety Requirements
Electric Safety and Protection
Chargers must prevent high voltage from appearing on the coupler pins before connection is established and must de-energise immediately on disconnection. Protection against electric shock must meet defined IP ratings for the connector. Ground fault detection must prevent charging if the protective earth connection is compromised.
Charging Process Safety
The charging sequence — including communication handshake, pre-charge, charging, and safe termination — must follow a defined protocol to prevent overcharge, overtemperature, and communication loss events. Requirements for charge termination on fault detection are specified.
