National Fire Alarm and Signalling Code
NFPA 72 is the US National Fire Alarm and Signalling Code, specifying requirements for the application, installation, location, performance, testing, and maintenance of fire alarm systems, fire warning equipment, and emergency communications systems. For battery energy storage system (BESS) installations, NFPA 72 governs the fire detection and alarm systems required to provide early warning of thermal events and trigger emergency response.

Scope
NFPA 72 applies to fire detection, alarm, and signalling systems in all occupancy types including industrial BESS facilities. NFPA 855 requires BESS installations to be protected by fire alarm systems meeting NFPA 72, with specific detector types appropriate to the hazard — including gas detectors for battery off-gas detection as an early-warning layer before thermal runaway reaches the fire stage.
Key Requirements for BESS Applications
Detector Selection
BESS facilities require a combination of detection technologies: heat detectors, smoke detectors, and combustible gas detectors tuned to hydrogen and VOC off-gases from cell venting. NFPA 72 provides the framework for detector placement, spacing, and sensitivity classification. Early warning systems using gas detection at the battery module or rack level are an emerging requirement.
System Initiating Devices and Notification
On detection, the alarm system must initiate audible and visual notification to occupants, transmit to a monitoring station or fire service, and activate suppression system pre-action sequences. For BESS, integration with the BESS management system to initiate safe shutdown on alarm activation is a common design requirement.
