UL 1995

Standard for Safety — Heating and Cooling Equipment

UL 1995 is a US safety standard for heating and cooling equipment including heat pumps, air conditioners, dehumidifiers, and related products. Its relevance to the battery industry arises from its application to battery-powered HVAC units used in EV thermal management and to battery-integrated climate control systems. Equipment that combines energy storage with heating or cooling functions may require UL 1995 certification alongside battery-specific standards.

Related standards: UL 9540 (energy storage systems), ASHRAE 15 (refrigerating systems)

Scope

UL 1995 covers heating and cooling equipment operating on single-phase and three-phase supply voltages. For battery applications, it is relevant to battery-powered rooftop units for electric trucks and buses, battery-integrated HVAC systems for EV cabins, and BESS enclosures with integrated climate control where the cooling equipment must be safety-certified.

Key Requirements

Electrical and Mechanical Safety

Equipment must meet requirements for insulation resistance, dielectric withstand, grounding continuity, and protection against electric shock. Mechanical requirements cover structural integrity, refrigerant containment, and protection against rotating parts. Thermal cutouts and pressure relief devices must operate within rated limits.

Refrigerant Safety

Requirements address refrigerant charge limits for flammable refrigerants (A2L class such as R-32 and R-454B increasingly used in modern systems), leak detection, and ventilation requirements for equipment rooms. Battery-integrated HVAC using A2L refrigerants must meet both UL 1995 and applicable ASHRAE requirements.
