ASTM International

ASTM International (formerly the American Society for Testing and Materials) is one of the world’s largest voluntary standards development organisations, with over 12,000 standards covering materials, products, systems, and services across industries including aviation, automotive, and energy storage.

In aviation, the ASTM F39 Committee on Aircraft Systems develops certification and design standards for electric propulsion systems, aircraft electrical systems, and battery installations. These standards are increasingly accepted by the FAA and EASA as Means of Compliance (MoC) for eVTOL and electric aircraft type certification programmes — making them foundational documents for any electric aviation battery system seeking airworthiness approval.

ASTM aviation standards are particularly important because they fill gaps that older airworthiness regulations (14 CFR Part 25, CS-25) were not written to address: distributed electric propulsion, high-energy lithium battery packs as primary propulsion sources, and the specific installation and crashworthiness challenges of novel vehicle configurations.
