ASTM F3239 — Standard Specification for Aircraft Electric Propulsion Systems defines minimum requirements for complete electric propulsion systems installed on aircraft. Developed under ASTM F39, it covers the propulsion system as a whole — from energy storage through to the propulsor — and is accepted by the FAA as a Means of Compliance for electric aircraft type certification.
Scope
F3239 addresses the complete electric propulsion system (EPS) including energy storage (batteries or fuel cells), power conversion electronics, electric motors, and their interconnections. It sets performance, safety, and qualification requirements at the system level, complementing the component-level standards for batteries (F3653), electrical systems (F3316), and electric engines (F3338).
Battery system relevance
At the propulsion system level, F3239 drives requirements that flow down to the battery pack design:
- System-level energy and power requirements determining minimum pack capacity and peak discharge rate
- Reliability and safety objectives (failure modes, effects, and probability targets) that the battery system must support
- Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) requirements for the propulsion system — relevant to BMS electronics
- Environmental qualification requirements aligned with DO-160
- End-of-life performance definitions affecting battery sizing margins
