The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is the US government agency responsible for regulating civil aviation, including the certification of aircraft and aircraft components. The FAA sets airworthiness requirements through Federal Aviation Regulations (FARs), codified in Title 14 of the Code of Federal Regulations (14 CFR).
For electric and hybrid-electric aircraft, the FAA issues Special Conditions to address novel technologies while formal rules mature. High-power propulsion battery packs for eVTOL programs (Joby, Archer, Wisk and others) have been regulated through bespoke Special Conditions under 14 CFR Parts 23 and 25.
