IEC 60086-1

IEC 60086-1 is the foundational standard in the IEC 60086 series for primary (non-rechargeable) batteries. Published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), it establishes the general requirements, test methods, dimensional specifications, and designation system that apply across all primary battery chemistries. All other parts of the IEC 60086 series (including Part 4 for lithium safety and Part 5 for aqueous electrolyte safety) build on the framework established in Part 1.

Current edition: IEC 60086-1:2026 (14th edition) — published June 2026, cancels and replaces the 13th edition (2021)
Companion standards: IEC 60086-2 (physical and electrical specifications), IEC 60086-4 (lithium battery safety), IEC 60086-5 (aqueous electrolyte safety)

2026 Edition (14th Edition)

The 14th edition, published in June 2026, is described by the IEC as a technical revision that cancels and replaces the 13th edition of 2021. As of this update, the IEC has not published a detailed public summary of the specific clauses that changed between the 13th and 14th editions — that level of detail sits behind the full purchased standard text. Engineers relying on IEC 60086-1 for designation, dimensional, or performance requirements should confirm they are working from the 2026 edition rather than the 2021 edition, since the two editions are not interchangeable references now that the 14th formally supersedes the 13th.

Scope

IEC 60086-1 applies to all primary (non-rechargeable) batteries intended for portable use. It covers single cells, battery packs assembled from multiple cells, and batteries in all common electrochemical systems including zinc-carbon, alkaline manganese, zinc-air, silver oxide, and lithium primary chemistries. The standard defines the electrical and mechanical tests that batteries must pass and establishes the designation coding system used to identify battery type, dimensions, and chemistry.

Key Requirements

The standard specifies requirements for battery designation and marking, dimensional tolerances for standardised cell formats, and discharge performance under defined test conditions. Batteries must be marked with their designation code, nominal voltage, polarity, and manufacturer identification. Dimensional requirements ensure physical interchangeability between manufacturers for the same cell format (e.g., AA, AAA, C, D, 9V).

Performance requirements define the minimum service capacity a battery must deliver at defined loads and temperatures. IEC 60086-1 also sets general requirements for leakage resistance, and specifies how batteries should behave at end of discharge to prevent hazardous leakage or rupture under normal use conditions.

Testing Requirements

Tests defined in IEC 60086-1 include discharge performance tests at standard and elevated temperature, dimensional measurement, short-circuit current measurement, and leakage tests. Discharge performance tests are conducted at defined constant resistive or current loads representative of typical application use. The standard also addresses test conditions for verifying performance at low temperature for batteries intended for cold environment use.

Relevance to Battery Engineering

For battery engineers and product designers, IEC 60086-1 is the reference framework for understanding primary battery designation, dimensions, and baseline performance expectations. Engineers specifying primary batteries for medical devices, military equipment, IoT sensors, or consumer electronics use the designation system and performance tables in IEC 60086-1 to select appropriate cell types. The standard’s leakage and safety requirements set the minimum bar that primary cells must meet before the chemistry-specific safety requirements of Parts 4 and 5 are applied.

Related Standards

IEC 60086-4 specifies additional safety requirements specifically for lithium primary batteries. IEC 60086-5 addresses safety for primary batteries with aqueous electrolytes. IEC 60086-2 provides the physical and electrical specifications for individual standardised battery formats. UN 38.3 governs the transport testing requirements that apply to primary lithium batteries in addition to IEC 60086-4.
