IEC 62485-3

IEC 62485-3 is an international standard published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that specifies safety requirements for secondary batteries and battery installations used in traction applications — specifically electric vehicles such as industrial trucks, battery-powered locomotives, and light electric vehicles. It addresses installation, use, inspection, maintenance, and disposal safety, covering hazards from electricity, gas emission, and electrolyte.

Published by: International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC)

Current edition: 2nd edition, July 2014 (IEC 62485-3:2014 Ed.2)

Replaces: IEC 62485-3:2010 (1st edition)

European adoption: EN 62485-3:2014 / BS EN 62485-3:2014

Scope

IEC 62485-3 applies to secondary batteries and battery installations used in electric vehicles, including:

  • Electric industrial trucks — lift trucks, tow trucks, cleaning machines, automated guided vehicles (AGVs)
  • Battery-powered locomotives
  • Electric vehicles including goods vehicles, golf carts, bicycles, and powered wheelchairs

The standard covers lead-acid (lead dioxide-lead), nickel-cadmium (NiCd), nickel-metal hydride (NiMH), and other alkaline secondary battery technologies. Nominal voltages are limited to 1,000 V a.c. and 1,500 V d.c.

Exclusions: The standard does not cover the design of the vehicles themselves, nor does it address secondary lithium batteries in traction applications (which fall under separate IEC standards). Stationary batteries are covered by IEC 62485-2.

Key Requirements

Electrical Safety

  • Protection against direct and indirect electrical contact during normal operation and maintenance
  • Requirements for insulation resistance and short-circuit protection
  • Labelling and marking of battery systems and charging circuits

Ventilation

A critical update in the 2014 edition was a comprehensive revision of Clause 6, which introduced a unified formula for calculating the required ventilation airflow during battery charging. Adequate ventilation is essential to prevent accumulation of hydrogen gas (evolved during charging of lead-acid and alkaline cells) reaching explosive concentrations.

  • Calculation method for minimum ventilation airflow in battery charging areas based on battery capacity and charging current
  • Requirements for both natural and forced ventilation systems
  • Proximity restrictions for ignition sources in charging areas

Installation Requirements

  • Floor material properties — resistance to electrolyte, anti-static characteristics, and load-bearing capacity for battery weights
  • Requirements for battery changing and handling equipment, including lifting devices and connectors
  • Segregation of battery compartments from other vehicle systems
  • Charger compatibility and connection requirements

Electrolyte Handling

  • Safe handling procedures for sulfuric acid (lead-acid) and potassium hydroxide (alkaline) electrolytes
  • Personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements for maintenance personnel
  • Spill containment and emergency wash facilities in charging areas

Maintenance, Inspection, and Disposal

  • Periodic inspection requirements for electrolyte levels, terminal integrity, and battery capacity
  • Safe disposal requirements in accordance with applicable waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) directives

Regional Adoption

  • International: Published by IEC and adopted globally as a reference standard
  • Europe: Adopted as EN 62485-3:2014 by CENELEC; published as BS EN 62485-3:2014 in the UK
  • GCC region: Adopted as GSO IEC 62485-3:2021
  • Compliance is typically required by workplace safety regulations governing industrial truck operations in Europe and internationally
