Key Safety Features of Lithium-Ion Cells

AION Engineering INC

Safety is at the core of every lithium-ion cell design. To ensure reliable operation in demanding applications, the cell assembly and structure integrate multiple layers of protection. These features collectively reduce the risk of failure, overheating, or explosion.

PTC (Positive Temperature Coefficient Device)

The PTC acts as a resettable fuse:

  • As temperature rises, its resistance increases sharply, limiting current flow and preventing further heat buildup.
  • Once the cell cools, the PTC resets, allowing normal operation again.

Applications:

  • Energy cells: Best suited for cells designed for high energy density. PTC provides an essential safeguard since these cells prioritize capacity over current delivery.
  • Power cells: Typically not used, since higher resistance under heavy current loads is undesirable.

CID (Current Interrupt Device)

The CID is a one-time protection mechanism:

  • It disconnects the circuit when internal pressure exceeds safe limits due to overcharging or abnormal thermal activity.

Activation thresholds differ:

  • Energy cells: Low activation pressure. Early disconnection is crucial to prevent thermal runaway in high-energy-density cells.
  • Power cells: Higher activation pressure. These cells operate under heavy loads, and premature cut-off would be counterproductive.

Safety Vent

The safety vent is the final line of defense:

  • If pressure keeps rising after CID activation, the vent releases gases in a controlled manner.
  • This prevents violent rupture or explosion.

Design variations:

  • Energy cells: Vents activate at lower pressures to minimize explosion risk.
  • Power cells: Vents activate at higher pressures to handle greater electrolyte stress from high currents.

Notched Can Bottom

The notched can bottom serves as a backup venting pathway:

  • If the top vent fails, the notched bottom ruptures in a controlled way.
  • This provides an additional layer of protection against catastrophic failure.

Center Pin

The center pin is an internal safety element:

  • Guides gas release during venting.
  • Helps prevent uncontrolled rupture by directing vented gases safely.

Cost vs. Safety Trade-Offs

⚠️ Some low-cost cells lack CID or PTC, creating serious safety concerns. Omitting these protections reduces cost but significantly compromises reliability.

Selecting or designing a lithium-ion cell always involves balancing:

  • Performance (energy vs. power)
  • Cost
  • Safety features

Conclusion

Together, PTC, CID, safety vent, notched can bottom, and center pin form a multi-layered safety system. These features ensure that lithium-ion cells can operate reliably across diverse applications—whether optimized for high energy density or high power output.
