IEC 60896-22 specifies the performance and safety requirements for valve-regulated lead-acid (VRLA) stationary batteries, published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). It is Part 22 of the IEC 60896 series and defines what VRLA batteries must achieve, with the test procedures to verify compliance detailed in the companion standard IEC 60896-21.

Scope
IEC 60896-22 applies to VRLA stationary batteries used in standby power applications, including UPS systems, telecommunications infrastructure, emergency lighting, and grid support applications. The standard defines minimum requirements for rated capacity, float charge voltage, charge acceptance, gas evolution limits, and dimensional tolerances. It covers batteries with nominal cell voltages of 2 V, assembled into larger battery strings as required by the application.
Key Requirements
IEC 60896-22 requires that VRLA batteries deliver at least 80% of their rated capacity at the C10 discharge rate after a defined formation and conditioning process. Float charge voltage requirements set the recommended range within which batteries should be maintained during continuous standby operation, balancing the competing demands of full charge maintenance and minimising water loss and grid corrosion over the battery’s life.
Gas evolution requirements set maximum permissible hydrogen emission rates during charging, which determine ventilation requirements for battery rooms and enclosures. The standard also specifies requirements for electrolyte retention — VRLA batteries must not leak electrolyte under normal or defined tilt/inversion conditions, which is a fundamental property of the sealed design.
Relevance to Battery Engineering
IEC 60896-22 is the primary reference standard for engineers specifying VRLA batteries for stationary applications. It defines the minimum performance thresholds against which battery datasheets should be verified and sets the framework for procurement specifications. For UPS system designers, the standard’s float voltage requirements and gas emission limits are directly relevant to system design, charger specification, and site ventilation calculations. When combined with IEC 62485-2 (installation safety), IEC 60896-22 provides the complete technical basis for a VRLA battery installation.
