ISO 12405-3

Electrically Propelled Road Vehicles — Test Specification for Lithium-Ion Battery Packs and Systems — Part 3: Safety Performance Requirements

ISO 12405-3 specifies safety performance requirements and test procedures for lithium-ion battery packs and systems in electric and hybrid electric road vehicles. It defines abuse and safety tests that must be passed for automotive type approval and homologation, complementing the performance tests of ISO 12405-1/2 and ISO 12405-4.

Scope

ISO 12405-3 applies to battery packs and systems for EV/HEV road vehicles with a working voltage above 60 V DC. Tests assess safety responses to mechanical, thermal, and electrical abuse conditions at the pack/system level. The standard covers both internal failure scenarios and externally imposed hazard conditions.

Key Safety Tests

Mechanical Abuse

Tests include external short circuit (at system terminals), mechanical shock, vibration, and external crush. The pack must not catch fire or explode; venting without flame is an acceptable outcome for some tests depending on the test category.

Thermal Abuse

Thermal stability and fire resistance tests assess pack behaviour under extreme temperature exposure and simulated fire. Overcharge and over-temperature tests evaluate the effectiveness of battery management system protections.
