ISO 12405-1

Electrically Propelled Road Vehicles — Test Specification for Lithium-Ion Battery Packs and Systems — Part 1: High-Power Applications

ISO 12405-1 is an international standard specifying performance and life tests for lithium-ion battery packs and systems used in high-power EV and HEV applications, where the key requirement is peak power delivery for acceleration and regenerative braking rather than maximum energy storage (see Power versus Energy Cells).

Published by: International Organization for Standardization (ISO)

Part of series: ISO 12405-2 (high energy), ISO 12405-3 (safety), ISO 12405-4 (performance)

Scope

ISO 12405-1 applies to lithium-ion battery packs and systems for use in hybrid and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles where the application is characterised by high specific power, high charge acceptance rates, and frequent shallow cycling. It defines test procedures for performance characterisation at the pack/system level including cold-start power, charge-sustaining cycling, and calendar life.

Key Test Procedures

Power Capability Testing

Peak discharge and charge power capability are measured at defined states of charge and temperatures, including cold-start conditions at −18 °C. Power capability must be measured across the usable SOC window to characterise available power throughout the operating range.

Cycle Life and Calendar Life

Accelerated cycle life tests use dynamic stress test (DST) profiles representing HEV duty cycles. Calendar life testing at elevated temperature assesses capacity fade and power fade attributable to storage degradation. End-of-life criteria are defined in terms of power fade and capacity loss thresholds.
