Electrically Propelled Road Vehicles — Test Specification for Lithium-Ion Battery Packs and Systems — Part 2: High-Energy Applications
ISO 12405-2 specifies test procedures for lithium-ion battery packs and systems in high-energy EV applications — primarily battery electric vehicles (BEV) — where maximum driving range and energy capacity are the primary design objectives.

Scope
ISO 12405-2 applies to lithium-ion packs and systems for BEV applications characterised by deep cycling, relatively low power-to-energy ratio, and the requirement for maximum usable energy over a full discharge cycle. It defines tests for capacity, energy throughput, charge/discharge efficiency, and accelerated cycle life.
Key Test Procedures
Capacity and Energy Testing
Reference capacity and usable energy are measured at multiple temperatures (−10 °C, 23 °C, 45 °C) at defined discharge rates. Capacity retention over temperature is characterised to establish the usable energy available for range estimation across climate conditions.
Cycle Life Testing
Cycle life is assessed using simplified EV driving profiles with deep discharge cycles. The test defines charge and discharge current profiles, rest periods, and temperature conditions. Capacity fade must be recorded periodically; end-of-life is typically defined at 80% of initial capacity (see State of Health).
