Molicel’s 21700 High-Power Roadmap

Molicel, the Taiwan-based manufacturer known for producing some of the most trusted high-power lithium-ion cells, is expanding its 21700 product line. Long a favourite in motorsport, drones and aerospace, Molicel is now building a broader portfolio to serve a wider range of performance and energy demands.

Molicel Roadmap

Their current roadmap outlines three distinct 21700 series: the proven P-Series, the high-power XA-Series, and the new PX-Series that blends energy and power at the premium end.

P-Series: Proven All-Rounders

The P-Series includes cells like the P45B, P50B and P60B. These deliver 250–300 Wh·kg⁻¹ energy density and continuous discharge rates of 10–20C, with power densities around 3–6 kW·kg⁻¹.

These cells are suited for demanding but balanced use cases where thermal stability, durability and energy capacity all matter. Applications range from electric aviation and drones to high-performance automotive.

PX-Series: Premium Performance for High-RoI Applications

The PX-Series is Molicel’s latest addition, developed through a dedicated super pilot line. It includes the P50X, P60X and P70X, and is best described as a premium version of the P-Series. These cells maintain energy densities approaching 300 Wh·kg⁻¹, but offer higher discharge rates — up to 30C continuous — making them suitable for systems requiring sustained power and energy.

This added performance comes at a higher cost. The PX-Series is aimed at high-value applications where battery performance drives clear return on investment, such as defence, eVTOL and space-constrained platforms.

XA-Series: Purpose-Built for Extreme Power

The XA-Series, introduced in 2023, is designed specifically for extremely high-power applications, commonly seen in hybrid propulsion systems for aviation and motorsport. Cells such as the XA1 and XA2 are capable of peak discharge rates up to 100C, with power densities exceeding 15 kW·kg⁻¹.

This series sacrifices energy density for power delivery and thermal safety, targeting short-duration, high-intensity use cases.

The Takeaway

Molicel’s 21700 lineup reflects a strategic evolution from a power-cell specialist to a full-spectrum performance supplier. The P-Series offers versatility, the XA-Series delivers extreme power for hybrid propulsion, and the PX-Series provides premium power and energy where performance justifies the cost.

For battery engineers and pack designers, these clearer distinctions make it easier to align cell choice with mission requirements.
