Solid State Battery Testing Mould Cleaning

If you want the best results in the laboratory it is really useful to learn from the experts: Solid state battery testing mould cleaning tips.

The Problem:

Solid-state battery moulds are extremely sensitive to leftover powder, water stains, or surface scratches. Any of these can lead to poor electrode contact, low densification, and ultimately, wasted experiments…

The Process

Step 1: Deep Cleaning (Deionized Water + Ultrasonic)

  • Start by rinsing the mould with deionized water to remove surface powder.
  • Place it in an ultrasonic cleaner and run at medium frequency for 3–5 minutes.
    • If the mould is made of mixed ceramic-metal components, avoid using too high a setting to prevent chipping.
  • After rinsing, use a lint-free cloth or lens tissue dipped in a small amount of anhydrous ethanol.
    • Wipe from the inside out in one direction—avoid back-and-forth motions to prevent fibre residue.

Step 2: Quick Drying (Temperature Controlled)

  • Key point: Never let it air dry!
    • Minerals left behind by water can form white stains and ruin the mould.
  • Procedure: Place the mould in an oven and dry at 60–80°C for 30 minutes.
  • Pro tip: Don’t take it out immediately after drying.
    • Wait until the temperature drops below 40°C before opening the oven to avoid thermal expansion/contraction that could cause micro-deformations.

Step 3: Fine Polishing (Restoring a Mirror Finish = Better Performance)

This step is critical for achieving high-quality final results.

  • Tools: Use metallographic sandpaper (recommended: 2000-grit → 5000-grit).
  • Technique: Place the sandpaper on a flat surface and polish gently.
    • Use light pressure—the goal is to remove fine scratches, not to alter the dimensions.
  • Standard: After polishing, hold the mould up to the light.
    • The surface should have a mirror-like shine with no visible scratches. That’s the benchmark.
