Status of Battery Passports in 2026

As of 2026, the battery passport ecosystem has transitioned from a theoretical concept and pilot phase into a period of urgent, large-scale implementation. With the European Union’s strict mandate for full digital battery passports going into effect on February 18, 2027, manufacturers and supply chains are in a critical sprint to build the necessary data infrastructure.

Here is the current status of battery passports in 2026 across key areas:

EU Regulatory Milestones Hit in 2026

While the full EU digital passport is mandated for 2027, several strict prerequisites under the EU Battery Regulation (2023/1542) are actively coming into force in 2026:

  • February 18, 2026: Carbon footprint declarations became mandatory for all rechargeable industrial batteries with a capacity greater than 2 kWh.
  • August 18, 2026: Batteries must feature visible, readable labels and QR codes containing essential information regarding capacity and minimum expected lifetime.
  • Additionally, the European Commission is establishing the official carbon footprint performance classes by August 2026, which will dictate maximum life cycle emission thresholds by 2028.

Industry Actions and 2026 OEM Contracts

The European Union officially delayed the mandatory third-party verification of supply chain due diligence from August 2025 to August 18, 2027. However, the industry has not slowed down. Because the full battery passport launches in early 2027, major original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) are already enforcing these due diligence verifications in their 2026 procurement contracts. Manufacturers realize that mapping supply chains and setting up IT registries takes 12 to 18 months, meaning compliance projects must be fully underway now.

Operational Trials

Following successful pilot programs in 2023 and 2024, the Global Battery Alliance (GBA) is currently conducting its 2026 Operational Trials. Seventeen consortia, representing leading companies across the battery value chain, are actively mapping supply chains, testing digital solutions, and collaborating with independent assurance providers. These are the largest-ever real-world trials for battery passports, with results expected in June 2026, paving the way for a fully operational, globally recognized GBA certification by 2027.

Technological Maturity and Data Security

Technology surrounding the passport has matured significantly. Patent filings in 2025 and 2026 reveal a shift toward advanced operational systems, including data completeness validation, schema enforcement, and automated carbon footprint tracking via digital twins and blockchain. Companies are heavily utilizing Role-Based Access Control (RBAC) and decentralized identifiers (DIDs) to ensure that while regulators and recyclers can access necessary compliance data, highly sensitive intellectual property (such as exact cathode chemistry stoichiometry) remains hidden from competitors and the public.

Global Adoption Accelerating

Beyond the EU, other major markets are rolling out complementary systems in 2026:

  • China: The Chinese government is launching a digital battery passport scheme aimed at boosting recycling and traceability specifically within the new energy vehicle (NEV) sector, building on the existing GB/T 34014-2017 battery coding and traceability standard, focusing heavily on end-of-life management.
  • India: India is rolling out its “Battery Aadhar” program, with the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) implementing a mandatory 21-digit BPAN QR traceability code for all domestic and imported batteries expected by 2025–2026. Cells lacking this authentication face customs rejections.
