2024 Hyundai Ioniq 5 N

The 2024 Hyundai Ioniq 5 N has revised battery chemistry to increase it to 84kWh.

The battery operates at a nominal 697V and can deliver a peak of 585kW.

Note: details of the pack and cell are very limited, hence we would like to find more data from which we can build estimates and model some of the parameters.

Temperature Control

Pre-set the battery temperature for optimized performance:

  • Drag mode: Pre-conditions the battery for maximum power. Target temperature is set at 30~40°C, ideal for fastest possible acceleration.
  • Track mode: Pre-conditions the battery to account for steady temperature rise during track drive. Target temperature is set at 20~30°C, allowing consistent performance for a number of laps.

DCIR versus Temperature: the internal resistance of a cell decreases as the temperature increases. This is very dependent on cell chemistry and on cell design. However, it generally holds that as you cool the cell down the internal resistance increases.

In simple terms this is because batteries generate current using a chemical reaction and the reaction generally goes slower at lower temperatures.

Mechanical Structure

To improve lateral rigidity, the motor and battery mounting points have been reinforced.

Cells

Hyundai have moved from LG Energy to SK Innovation for the future supply of cells for the Ioniq 5.

A nominal pack voltage 697V and energy of 84kWh suggests a capacity of 120Ah. Assuming this pack is 192s 2p would mean the cell is ~60Ah with cell nominal voltage of 3.63V
