Nuvvon pushes True Solid State boundaries … again
Author Dr. Simon Madgwick of Nuvvon Inc.

Recently Nuvvon shared 1Ah pouch cell specs for Gr-NMC811 and Li-NMC9 plus the related safety test data (nail and ARC). Here is complete cycle data for the Gr-NMC811 cells (it takes a while to get 900 cycles … and counting) and the first charge/discharge curves for the 5Ah Li-NMC9 cells (indicating high Columbic Efficiency and stability). Furthermore, we are introducing a new entrant: 5Ah SiC-NMC9.

These are completely solid cells (solid polymer electrolyte throughout, no liquid electrolyte / catholyte / anolyte) which is why the safety data is good. They use zero pressure (already shown in the case of Gr-NMC) or currently less than 1 bar in the case of Li-NMC9. The goal is true solid state without needing undisclosed “packaging”. This means that Nuvvon can take standard dry cells and make them truly solid state using the existing process. No funny business.

Data for above – note VED is for 100% charged cell – no funny tricks – the actual pouch cell VED & GED that works as a pouch cell (doesn’t need crazy undisclosed “packaging”).
Regarding the 5Ah specs, GED and VED is off the chart. The 5Ah cells have already been built and are on cycling. The new SiC-NMC9 is WIP for the UAV market – already showing very low temperature testing and designed for ultra-fast discharge. Nuvvon will follow up with 5Ah cycle life (that takes time right) and safety test results.

Meanwhile a cheeky picture of the founder, Manveer, with Nuvvon’s latest 20Ah Gr-NMC811 cell hot off the press. More on that next time.
