Equivalent Lithium Content

The equivalent lithium content lithium content of a lithium ion cell is simply 0.3g x Ah capacity of the cell.

Note that if the cell is rated in mAh you just need to divide the number by 1000 to get Ah.

Note: this is an estimation and shipping numbers and calculations should always be checked with the transport company.

IATA [3] give advice and direction on the air shipment of batteries. Lithium batteries may be shipped by air when all the applicable regulatory requirements are met. This includes making certain that:

  • The required documentation is completed
  • The cell and battery types have passed the applicable UN tests
  • All terminals are protected against short circuits
  • Packaging limits are met
  • Appropriate inner and outer packaging is used
  • packages bear the required marks and labels

IATA have checklists and flow charts to help companies work through the requirements.
