Types of EV Charging Connectors

by Ratings, Range, Time to Charge, Locations and Region: There are many Types of EV Charging Connectors in the world. It’s bit confusing sometimes for a Beginner to understand. The outlet of the charging station whether at Home or work or in Public has to match the outlet of your car. The Plug on the charging cable at either end specifically makes the difference.

When buying a electric vehicle it is important to understand the size of the battery pack in your car and what types of chargers you can use. The Electric Vehicle Supplier should usually provide some options of chargers with the vehicle. Then you have to also know what your House electric supply rating is and if the charger is suitable for your charging needs.

Mainly there are two segments for Types of EV Charging Connectors by current type:

Alternating current (AC) Chargers

This type of Chargers are good for Home, work and Public use. They are mostly slow to mid speed charging.

Type of AC chargers:

  1. Type 1 – J1772 used in America and Japan
  2. Type 2 – Mennekes (known by the German manufacturer who came up with the design) or IEC 62196 European Standards.
  3. GB/T AC First and Second Generation – China.
  4. Tesla Wall Connector (120 and 240 AC) and Destination Chargers – North America.

Direct Current (DC) Chargers

These type of chargers are mostly found in Public environment as they need special additional equipment, network connections etc. They are mostly used for Fast Charging.

Types of DC Chargers

  1. CHAdemo – used in Japan.
  2. Combo Type 1 – Combo of Type 1 J1772 and 2 DC pins
  3. Combo type 2 – Combo of Type 2 European and 2 DC pins
  4. GB/T DC 750 and 100 Volt – China
  5. Tesla V1,V2,V3 Superchargers – North America.

Below table is a live table I will be updating to understand different types of chargers by their ratings – Power (kW), Volt (V), Ampere (A), Range based on 7km/kWh, Time to charge (For a 60 kWh EV), Locations (whether Home, Work, Public), Region (America, Europe, China, Japan – will add more as necessary).

Formulas used in the Table for Calculations:

Power (kW) = Voltage Line to Line (V) x Current (Amps) x PF X (1 for 1 phase or 1.732 for 3 Phase)/1000. * Power Factor assumed to be 1.

Power (kW) = Voltage Line to Neutral (V) x Current (Amps) x PF X (1 for 1 phase or 3 for 3 Phase)/1000. * Power Factor assumed to be 1.

Range Km per Hour = Max or Min Power in kW x 7km/kW (7km/kWh is assumed value, Can be different depending in the Electric Vehicle)

Time to Charge 60 kWh Electric Vehicle = 60/Power in kW(Max or Min). *60 kWh is assumed, can be replaced by the size of battery pack in the electric vehicle of your choice.

  1. CCS Type 1 and 2 even at 1000 V and 500 A are at 500 kW. We decided based on feedback to limit it to Max Power Rating 350kW.
