Overview
Needs review: This site also has a separate page for this same standard at /legislation-rules-and-regulations/gb-t-36276-2023/ (not linked from the main standards hub). The two pages should likely be merged or one redirected to the other rather than left as duplicate content — left as-is for Nigel to decide which to keep.
GB/T 36276 is a Chinese national standard specifying safety and performance requirements for lithium-ion batteries used in electrical energy storage systems (BESS). First published in 2018 and significantly revised in 2023 (GB/T 36276-2023), the standard came into force on 1 July 2024 and establishes more stringent safety and reliability thresholds than the previous version, reflecting the rapid growth of grid-scale and commercial energy storage deployment in China.
The standard is published by the Standardization Administration of China (SAC) and is one of the core foundational standards in China’s energy storage regulatory framework. It covers the full product chain from individual cells through to complete battery systems, and applies to stationary energy storage applications rather than EV traction batteries.
Scope
GB/T 36276 applies to lithium-ion secondary cells and batteries used in industrial and commercial electrical energy storage applications, including grid-side storage, commercial and industrial behind-the-meter systems, and utility-scale BESS installations. It covers cells, modules, battery packs, and complete battery systems. The 2023 revision extended scope and requirements relative to the 2018 version, introducing updated performance metrics and additional safety test requirements aligned with the evolving needs of large-scale energy storage deployment.
Key Requirements
The standard addresses both performance requirements and safety requirements. Performance requirements include capacity, energy density, and cycle life metrics that products must meet at cell, module, and system level. Safety requirements address protection against hazardous events including fire, explosion, and toxic gas release under both normal operating conditions and abuse scenarios.
The 2023 revision introduced more comprehensive and stringent requirements compared to the 2018 edition, including additional safety test types and updated thresholds for performance metrics. Products must demonstrate compliance across the full hierarchy from cell to system, with each level meeting the requirements appropriate to its role in the overall BESS architecture.
Testing Requirements
GB/T 36276 defines safety tests including overcharge, over-discharge, and external short circuit at cell level, with the external short circuit test specifying a maximum connection resistance of less than 5 mΩ. Additional tests include thermal abuse (oven heating), mechanical abuse (crush and impact), and environmental tests including humidity and thermal cycling. At module and system level, the standard adds tests for insulation resistance, protection against water and dust ingress, and verification of battery management system protective functions.
Performance tests include capacity measurement at standard conditions, energy efficiency measurement over charge/discharge cycles, and cycle life testing to confirm that the specified capacity retention is maintained after the required number of cycles. Test conditions and procedures are specified to ensure reproducibility across different laboratories and manufacturers.
Relevance to Battery Design
For engineers designing or supplying BESS products for the Chinese market, GB/T 36276 compliance is a mandatory requirement for grid-side energy storage systems and is increasingly referenced in commercial and industrial procurement specifications. The standard drives design decisions at cell, module, and system level, influencing cell chemistry selection, module interconnect design, thermal management architecture, and BMS protective function specification. The 2023 revision’s stricter requirements mean that products qualified against the 2018 version may require re-testing and design updates to maintain market access.
