Advanced Z Stacking

Author: Khaled Mekdour

LG Energy Solution’s proprietary improvement on the basic Z-stacking electrode assembly method used in pouch-type lithium-ion batteries. It merges the traditional Z-stacking approach—where cathode and anode sheets are alternately layered with the separator in a zigzag pattern—with LG’s own Lamination & Stacking (L&S) technology and a heat-press bonding step to deliver enhanced safety, alignment precision, and manufacturing efficiency.

What makes AZS unique

Fusion of methods: AZS combines Z-Stacking with lamination technology, so that instead of merely stacking electrodes with folded separators, the stack is also heat-pressed to bond electrodes and separators more firmly.

Heat press bonding: Applying heat and pressure ensures strong adhesion between layers, which reduces risks of misalignment or shifting during handling and processing.

Improved safety: By tightening the interface between electrodes and separator and reducing issues like overhang (where one electrode protrudes relative to others), overall structural uniformity and cell safety are enhanced.

Manufacturing benefits: With the stack already bonded early in the process.
