CATL 24V Naxtra

The CATL 24V Naxtra is a sodium ion based pack designed for commercial truck engine start and operation.

  • 24V
  • Capacity = 192Ah
  • Usable energy = 4.5kWh
  • Minimum temperature = -40°C
  • 8 year service life
  • lifetime costs reduced by 61% compared to lead acid packs.

CATL claim that this pack is able to operate the air conditioning all night and still start the vehicle in the morning [3].

The motor show mock up and CAD images show just 2 terminals for power and no communications port.

The CAD images are very simplified, but give us some idea as to the arrangement of the cells and modules.

  • Configuration: 8s 1p
  • 2 modules of 4s 1p

The pack appears to have been created using two modules, each having 4 cells. This is sensible as it gives them the ability to later produce a 12V version using the same basic module.

There are substantial extruded endplates on the modules to apply pressure over the lifetime. Assumption from images is that the module structure is aluminium.

The sealing of the part shown at the motor show is questionable with the wavy rim of the top clamshell showing a poorly designed seal.

This suggests the unit on display was not a production part.

  1. Hi!
Good job, thanks a lot !
Any idea of the dimensions of the cells ? would be very usefull to calculate the energy density in Wh/L.
If would take typical formats of LFP CATL cells, could be : 71x173x203 mm or 48x173x203 mm.
    Or somewhere in between ?
