Gen 4 Formula e Battery

The fourth generation of Formula e has made some significant changes to the specifications. Maximum power increases to 600kW and regen up to 700kW. We should note though [1]:

  • Max Race Power: The newest generation of Formula E car delivers more power than ever before with 450kW peak race power, leading to faster, more competitive racing.
  • ATTACK MODE: Power is boosted to 600kW, providing powerful overtakes and delivering intense bursts of overtaking firepower, shaking up the pack.

The minimum weight has also increased significantly over the last generation. But what do we know about the battery:

  • Energy
    • usable = 55 kWh
  • Power
    • peak race = 450 kW
    • burst boost = 600 kW
    • peak regen = 700 kW
  • Weight
    • Pack ~ 340 kg
  • supplied by Podium Advanced Technologies

Podium Advanced Technologies

A quick look at the company behind the battery for the Gen 4 vehicle.

Established in 2011 by a team of three highly skilled engineers who hold Ph.D. degrees in the fields of mechatronics and automotive engineering, boasting a successful track record in the Formula SAE championships.

Winning the bid to supply the Gen 4 Formula e battery:

Success with their FIM MotoE World Cup deal with Ducati, which used an architecture that the FIA and Formula E wished to implement in the Formula e series.

The technical challenge is certainly important. But the real issue of a project like this is not so much in the details of the various technical intricacies. There is no area where you can take major risks. The crucial thing is to deliver a solid product that is in no way the subject of discussions in the championship. It’s our job as a supplier of such an important part of the car to provide the teams with a high-performance product that is reliable and functional. That’s the real issue with a supply like this.

Ducati V21L

Podium AT developed the battery pack in the Ducati V21L Moto E Battery. This uses 21700 cells and maybe is the strongest hint we have for the Gen 4 Formula E pack design.

Ducati V21L Moto E Battery

  • total energy = 18.66kWh
  • usable energy = 18kWh
    • Usable SoC = 96%
  • continuous discharge power
    • 120kW at battery terminals based on 110kW at the motor
  • charge power = 20kW
  • nominal voltage = 691.2V
  • capacity = 27Ah
  • voltage range = 806V to 480V (480V is based on minimum 2.5V per cell under load voltage)
