JLi Battery Co 37Ah 4695

We have just received the specification sheet for the JLi Battery Co 37Ah 4695 cell and it is really interesting. This is a 335Wh/kg cylindrical cell with a Ni-rich NMC cathode + Silicone Carbon anode.

The cells are using aluminium shell to enable the lightest weight and highest thermal performance.

The Welding instructions for this cell give some interesting insights.

The battery cell adopts a thermoelectric separation design, with both positive and negative electrodes
welded at the top, and welding is prohibited at the bottom position.

Metrics

  • Energy Density
    • gravimetric = 335 Wh/kg
    • volumetric = 837 Wh/litre
  • Power Density
    • gravimetric ~ 2146 W10s/kg
    • volumetric ~ 5355 W10s/litre
    • gravimeteric ~ 1376 Wcontinuous/kg

Note: for all of the power calculations we assumed the 10s 30% SOC DCIR value as a nominal.

Applications

  • eVTOL

    • at 0.5C = 37.2 Ah
  • Voltage
    • nominal at 0.33C = 3.53 V
    • maximum = 4.2 V
    • minimum at >0°C = 2.5 Min
  • Energy = 134.14 Wh
  • Format = Cylindrical
  • Chemistry
    • NMC Family
    • Ni-Rich Cathode
    • Anode = Gr + Si
  • DCIR 10s = 0.003 Ohms @25°C 30%SoC

    • diameter = 46.35 mm
    • height to shoulder = 95 mm
    • volume = 0.1603 Litres
    • case material = aluminium

In the above specification the case material would be easy to miss, but it really should be highlighted that this is aluminium.

We know from the study of aluminium cylindrical cans by Speira that they have a number of advantages:

  • lightweight
  • thermal
  • safety

As a comparison the BMW iX3 Neue Klasse Battery that uses the same 4695 cell format and size has a volumetric energy density of 747 Wh/litre, the JLi cell improves on this by 12%.

Discharge

  • Discharge current
    • continuous = 5C
      • = 185 A
    • 30s pulse = 8C
  • Discharge power
    • Peak 30s ~ 858 W10s
    • Peak 30s ~ 782 W30s
    • Continuous ~ 550 Wcont
