Sodium-Ion Supply Chain

The sodium-ion supply chain: what the chemistry doesn’t tell you

Author: Serguei Fenko at OmniSight

Everyone is talking about sodium-ion as if it were an escape from lithium dependence. It isn’t. It just moves the dependency one tier deeper.
Sodium-ion still needs a hidden midstream stack:

  • Prussian Blue Analogue cathodes (PBA)
  • High-Purity Manganese Sulphate (HPMSM)
  • Hard carbon anodes

That is where the real bottleneck sits. China controls most of that layer:

  • PBA cathode capacity
  • HPMSM refining
  • bio-carbon scale-up

So the market hasn’t escaped concentration risk. It has reloaded it. Natron Energy was a useful signal. Major backing. U.S. gigafactory ambition. Real scale plans. But subsidies do not replace chemical infrastructure or cost competitiveness. That is the point most battery discussions miss.
Engineers focus on chemistry. Procurement focuses on cost. The real risk sits between them — in process chemistry, refining capacity, and precursor control.

If sodium-ion scales, the key question is not whether the chemistry works. It is who controls the materials that make it manufacturable at scale.

That is the layer OMNISIGHT tracks.
