Canoo LDV 190 Battery

Canoo LDV 190

A look at the Canoo LDV 190 battery pack. 2170 based design that appears to use Panasonic cells.

The battery packs used in the Canoo Lifestyle Vehicle is one of the most technically advanced lithium-ion battery packs in the world. Using automotive grade lithium-ion cells, the Canoo battery achieves unmatched energy density and enables the long-range capability of the vehicle.

Metrics

  • Energy Density
    • 183.2 Wh/kg
    • 292.9 Wh/litre
  • Power Density
    • 384.9 W10s/kg
    • 615.4 W10s/litre

Specifications

  • Usable Energy = 73.7 kWh (Total = 78.8 kWh)
    • SoC Window = 93.6%
  • Nominal Voltage = 345.6 V
  • Nominal Capacity = 228 Ah
  • Peak Power = 166 kW10s
  • Fast Charge Power = 150 kWfast
  • 20% to 80% SoC Charge time = 32 minutes
  • Pack Mass = 430.1 kg
    • Cell Mass = 304.7kg
    • Pack-Cells = 125.4 kg
    • Cell to Pack Ratio = 71 %
  • Pack Volume = 269 litres
  • Configuration = 96s 46p
    • Total number of cells = 4416

It is interesting to note that in the EPA application the LDV 130 version has a usable pack energy of 76.3 kWh and our assumption is this based on the larger vehicle having slightly higher power demands and hence the discharge reaches the minimum cell voltage at a higher SOC.

No battery enclosure, claim is this saves 40kg.

Module

The pack is made up of 16 modules.

each module is 6s 46p with the cells arranged such that the cooling plate runs vertically with a 3s arrangement each side of the cooling plate

The cell interconnect board is a single layer design and is laser welded to the cells. Cells are glued to the cooling plate. This then forms the structure for the modules.

Cell

  • Cell Manufacturer = Panasonic
  • Chemistry = NCA
  • Format = 21700
  • Nominal
    • Capacity= 4.96 Ah
    • Voltage = 3.6 V
    • Energy = 17.84 Wh
  • Mass = 0.069 mass kg
  • Cell energy density = 258.6 Wh/kg

Overall an interesting pack design, but not the “unmatched energy density” that they claim in their EPA Application.
