Nominal Voltage Distribution vs BESS Application Type

Based on the analysis of the Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) applications, there is a clear correlation between the scale of the application and its nominal voltage.

This chart shows the mean voltage for each category, highlighting the step-change in voltage levels from residential/telecom applications to commercial and grid-scale systems.

The box plot provides a deeper look into the spread of voltages, showing that while “Grid” and “Commercial” applications are consistently high-voltage, “Home” and “Telecom” applications have a wider variety of configurations, including many low-voltage outliers.

Key Findings:

  • High-Voltage Applications: BESS Grid systems have the highest average nominal voltage at 1,116.7V, followed by BESS Commercial at 712.2V. These systems often reach up to 1,331.2V, reflecting the need for high efficiency and power density in large-scale energy storage.
  • Residential and Small-Scale Storage: BESS Home systems are the most common in the dataset (183 entries) and have a significantly lower average voltage of 192.4V. While many residential systems operate at 48V or 51.2V, the distribution shows a significant number of “high-voltage” home batteries operating between 300V and 600V.
  • Specialized Applications:
    • BESS UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) systems average 396.1V.
    • BESS Telecom systems have the lowest average at 109.2V, as they are frequently based on standard 48V telecommunications power architectures.
    • BESS Backup systems average 177.0V, similar to home storage profiles.

NOTE: this analysis has been done using AI to look at the Battery Pack Database. Hence it is based on the data we have provided along with an overview of the systems. As such it really is just a high level overview.
