The original post on the Rivian R2 battery pack was based on the 2024 Rivian Investor Day presentations. However, with the messages from the Rivian CEO [1] earlier this year we are overdue an update.

Trouble is the 2024 Investor Day R2 data left out a lot of the detail and so we were estimating the missing information.
Time to see if we can build a more complete picture with the latest references.
Specifications
- 3 modules
256cells each- 8 cells wide
- Total number of cells = 776 (see R2 2026 update to this post)
- Structural Pack
- top of the pack is also a portion of the floor
Some simple calculations suggest that the configuration is:
- 192s 4p
Cell
- Manufacturer = LG Energy Solutions
- Format = 4695 Cylindrical
- Nominal Capacity ~34 Ah
- Nominal Voltage ~3.6 V
- Mass ~ 0.41 kg
Note: at this point they are estimates until we find a cell specification sheet.

This post has been built based on the support of and sponsorship from: Resonate Testing Ltd, Quarto Technical Services, Eatron Technologies and About:Energy
Assuming that LG achieve a cell capacity of 34Ah our estimates suggest a 94kWh pack. The total mass of cells would be ~315kg and using the best fit trends for BEV’s this would give a pack that weighs 496kg.

The Battery Calculations Workbook allows you to play around with pack configurations and estimate a number of parameters.

RJ Scaringe also shared more detailed image of the module and the busbar connections to the cells.
Zoomed in we can see the connection to the centre of the cell and the edge connection to the can.
Within the layered top electrical sheet we can see very much smaller wavy connections, these are likely to be inline fuses.

A fairly typical single sided cylindrical cell arrangement.
Note what appears to be a drop in electrical isolation part on the top of the cell.
Our assumption is that these images show work in progress there are a number of areas where the assembly has not been uniform.

If you move around the image you can see tab weld reworks where an extra two welds have been applied.
Also, we can see wrinkles in the cell busbars where the tabs have been pushed down onto the cells.

Hello Nigel, this pack design for R2 seems outdated and changed on the way to the final product.
See the Youtube video with the title: “Rivian’s R2 Structural Battery Pack Explained by the Engineering Team” by Munro Live, July 22nd 2026
Rivian engineers claim: 776 cells for the pack of 94 kWh gross, 87.9 kWh net capacity.
And (from other sources): a 400V architecture, upto 600-620A for charging. So, likely a 97s 8p battery pack.
4695 cell by LG ES in NMCA chemistry seems correct. But no modules any more, instead a structural pack with potting (likely adhesive) and all the cells in there. Non-serviceable cell volume in the battery pack, but serviceable section named “powerhouse” for power electronics, accessible from under rear seats.
thank you, original data was based on Rivian’s annual presentation, will take a look at the video, best regards, Nigel
