In previous articles we’ve highlighted the benefits of aluminium cell housings for 4680 battery cells like improved thermal management and gravimetric energy density and explored the structural performance of 4680 cans made from Speira ION Cell 3-CB and Speira ION Cell 3-CS1,2,3. It has been shown that high strength aluminium grades like Speira ION Cell … Read more
The Tesla 4680 Cell Generation 2 is interesting as this has been in the battery and electric vehicle news so much. We originally looked at the Tesla 4680 cell back in November 2022, since then lots of progress and once again The Limiting Factor have done a teardown. The “roses” that collect the edges of … Read more
The Tesla Cybertruck Battery is an interesting design as a lot of elements are developed from the 4680 based Model Y. In the previous post we looked at the battery to body structure around the Cybertruck. Note: huge thanks to Munro Live and their teardowns, checkout their channel and references below to see more. The … Read more

Recent industrial and academic studies have shown that aluminium cell housings can provide several benefits in terms of thermal management and gravimetric energy density in particular1,2,3. However, as Cell-To-Pack and Cell-To-Chassis approaches arise the battery cell and therefore, the battery cell housing, become part of the structure of the battery electric vehicle contributing with their … Read more
Base vs side cooling of cylindrical cells is often brought up in online discussions and in many OEMs designing battery packs. We looked at this before within Thermal Conduction in a Cell, however, I think it is worth expanding this topic. The Tesla design cools the side of the cell and the Lucid Motors cools … Read more
Benefits of Aluminium Cell Housing for Cylindrical Li-ion Batteries is based on a 4680 cell concept. The battery industry is targeting larger cell formats, which enable simplified module design and cell-to-pack or even cell-to-chassis solutions. In this regard, hard case battery cells and in particular cylindrical cells will play an important role in enabling the … Read more
